I was born in Texas to a military family. My Mom and Dad were devoted Catholics and ensured each of us Davis siblings (eventually six) were raised in Catholicism. Dad, as an Army officer, required the Davis family be run somewhat like a boot camp.
Catholicism and my parents’ upbringing gave me a clear understanding of what sin was, and I left the home very young with that sense. But where I was clear on what was right and wrong, I carried guilt from sin, and I had no understanding of my need to come to Jesus with a repentant heart and ask Him for forgiveness.
After HS graduation, I went into the Air Force, and after training, served at Beale AFB CA. I became friends with Steve, a very wild fellow airman who worked night shifts, where he could hide his long hair and live the drug scene. One evening Steve asked me to shave his long hair off—all of it. He said he’d found Jesus as his Lord and Savior and he was a new creature, no longer of drug use and sin. No more hiding in darkness, partying and using drugs; he talked only of Jesus and how he was clean inside and free of guilt.
After a few weeks of listening to Steve talk about Jesus, I joined him for a weekday worship service. Just inside the church foyer, a fellow young man asked me if I knew Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I was ready and anxious to really know this Jesus. He led me in a sinner’s prayer of confessing my sin and my need for Jesus’ forgiveness and His salvation. On that evening in the summer of 1974, I became a new creation in Christ, understanding it was in believing and trusting in Jesus, and turning from sin, that He’d forgiven me.
I met my lovely Lori in 2004 and we married in 2005. We moved to Pahrump Valley in 2010 and we’re happy to call it home. Lori has a son and a daughter, and I have two daughters. We pray they will one day come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
I seek to serve my Lord with service to others and to our church. He’s commanded me to love Him first and foremost, to tell others about Him, and to seek out, help and serve, and love my neighbors.
